The pits and grooves in your teeth, especially the molars, are prime areas for opportunistic decay. Even if you brush and floss regularly, you can still miss some of these areas on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

For this reason, our dentist offers sealants. Dental sealants are thin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. They are designed to prevent the intrusion of bacteria and other debris into the deep crevices on the tops of your teeth, reducing the chances that you will develop tooth decay or other problems.

Sealants were developed about 50 years ago, but did not become widely used until the 1970s. Today, sealants are a highly effective preventive treatment. Sealants are a particularly effective treatment for young children, as their teeth have not experienced decay and sealants can help protect them from developing it altogether. Even on teeth where decay is present, sealants have been shown to effectively prevent additional damage from occurring.

When you receive a dental sealant, our dentist will begin by cleaning the tooth surface. The teeth will then be etched with an abrasive substance to allow the sealant to better adhere to the tooth. The sealant is then applied, and a warm light source is direct to the site to promote faster drying. Sealants usually need to be re-applied every 5-10 years.
