If your dental problem requires facial reconstruction, including procedures involving the oral cavity, you may need oral and maxillofacial surgery to restore your oral health. You may also require treatment from a dental specialist if you need a surgical procedure of the head or neck area. Common maxillofacial procedures include jaw surgery and denture-related problems. Individuals with protruding chins, crooked or buck teeth, or misaligned teeth are good candidates for maxillofacial surgery. If you are experiencing these problems, you may need to meet with a maxillofacial surgeon.

Jaw Correction
Jaws do not always grow at the same rate – one may come in larger than the other, or simply not be properly aligned with the other bone structures in the skull. This can cause problems with the tongue and lips, chewing, and speech. Jaw surgery can move the jaws into their proper face and correct other problems with upper facial features, such as the nose and cheeks.

In addition to correct jaw problems surgically, orthodontic treatments, such as braces, may be needed to restore the correct bite relationship and ensure that the jaws remain properly aligned. Other appliances, such as tiny wires or rubber bands, may be needed to keep the jaws in place and promote faster healing. Our dentist may also recommend small “fixation” screws or plates be inserted into the jaws to facilitate easy movement of the jaws following a surgical procedure.

Denture Fatigue
People who have worn dentures for long periods of time can sometimes experience a loss of gum and bone tissue due to the wear and tear of the appliance on the soft tissues of their mouth. In more extreme cases, maxillofacial surgery such as bone grafting, manipulation of soft tissues, and jaw realignment may be recommended to correct these problems.
