If you have gum disease, you will develop pockets of bacteria around your teeth in which gum disease can thrive. When this occurs, Dr. Mark Rowe can provide you with flap surgery to remove the tartar in these pockets and reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Please call us at 770-622-5909 to learn more about flap surgery in Duluth, Georgia, and schedule your appointment with our dentist at Meadowbrook Family Dentistry.

Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth. When you have periodontal (gum) disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, forming pockets around the teeth that deepen with time, providing an increasingly larger space for bacteria to thrive and wreak havoc in your mouth. As the bacteria accumulate and advance under the gum tissue, additional bone and tissue loss occurs. If too much bone is lost, the teeth will fall out or need to be extracted.

Flap surgery, also known as pocket reduction, is performed to remove deposits of plaque and tartar in these pockets, or to reduce the periodontal pockets, making it easier for you and our dental professionals to keep the area clean. This treatment is recommended if daily, at-home oral hygiene and professional care routines cannot effectively reach these deep pockets.

When you receive flap surgery, our dentist will lift the gums back from your teeth and remove the tartar. Your gums will then be sutured back into place so that the tissue fits snugly around the tooth again. In some cases, irregular surfaces of your damaged bone will be smoothed to help limit the areas where disease-causing bacteria can hide, allowing the gum tissue to better reattach to healthy bone.
