When you have periodontal disease, our dentist may recommend a scaling and root planing treatment to remove plaque and harmful bacteria from your mouth and help you reduce your gum disease. Please contact Meadowbrook Family Dentistry at 770-622-5909 to learn more about scaling and root planing in Duluth, Georgia, and schedule your appointment with Dr. Mark Rowe.
Some cases of acute gum disease that do not respond to more conventional treatments and improved oral hygiene regimens may require a scaling and root planing treatment. Scaling and root planing is a special, non-surgical type of cleaning that removes plaque and bacteria from below your gum line.
Our dentist will begin your scaling and root planing treatment by administrating a local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort. He will then use a small instrument called a scaler or an ultrasonic cleaner to clean beneath your gum line and remove plaque and tartar from your mouth. We will then smooth the root surfaces of your tooth to help prevent harmful bacteria from collecting on them and allow the gums to reattach themselves to your teeth.
If your periodontal pockets persist following a scaling and root planing treatment, we may recommend further treatment.
